The Explorer’s Code: Respecting the Land of Kasanggayahan
Welcome to Sorsogon! To the locals, this is the “Land of Kasanggayahan”, a Bicolano word meaning “a life of prosperity and peace”. We are known for our hospitality, but as a traditional province, we value respect and mindfulness. Follow this guide to travel not just as a tourist, but as a guest of our home.
Respecting Traditions & Sacred Spaces
Q: How should I dress when exploring? A: Sorsogon is laid-back, but we are a traditional province. While swimwear is perfect for the beaches of Gubat or Subic, please wear a cover-up or shirt when walking through town centers or visiting our historic churches like the Barcelona Church or the Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral.
Q: How do I greet locals? A: A simple “Marhay na aga” (Good Morning) or “Marhay na hapon” (Good Afternoon) goes a long way. If you want to show extra respect to elders, you can add “Tabi” (equivalent to “please” or “excuse me”) to your sentences.
Wildlife & Nature Etiquette
Q: What is the Whale Shark (Butanding) Etiquette? A: We take conservation seriously. In Donsol, you must follow these strict rules: no flash photography, no touching, and maintain a 3-meter distance from the shark’s tail. Violators will be asked to leave the water immediately to protect these gentle giants.
Q: Are there rules for our beaches and parks? A: Sorsogon prides itself on “untouched” beauty. We practice a strict “Leave No Trace” policy. Avoid bringing single-use plastics to protected areas like Bulusan Lake or Juag Lagoon.
Dining & The “Bicolano Heat”
Q: Is “Sili” (Chili) mandatory in every meal? A: We love spice! Our signature dish, Bicol Express, is meant to be hot. However, we want you to enjoy your meal. If you prefer a milder version, tell the server “Dae masili” (Not spicy) or “Dikit na sili lang” (Just a little spice).
Q: What is the tipping culture? A: Tipping is not mandatory, but it is a gesture of “Dios Mabalos” (God will reward you/Thank you). A tip of ₱50–₱100 for a boatman, porter, or local guide who provided exceptional service is deeply appreciated and helps support local livelihoods.
